The Difference Between Scarcity Mindset And Abundance Mindset | Evelina Hovich | Mindset Coaching

Everybody wants to live a life of abundance, even if what that abundance looks like is different from person to person.

So in a way, wealth and abundance coaching is woven into every type of life coaching.

For some, it’s an abundance of material wealth.

For others, it’s an abundance of love and fulfilling relationships, or of community and a sense of belonging.

Perhaps you seek an abundant sense of purpose, of spiritual fulfillment in life.

But abundance isn’t just about having – it’s a mindset.

This is why mindset coaching is also present to a significant degree in all manifestation coaching.

In many cases, it’s about realigning your mentality – your beliefs about the world, your place in it, and your ability to thrive in it.

If that sounds surprising to you, you’re not alone.

Let’s take a look at how this works.

What Is A Scarcity Mindset?

Scarcity mentality measures out life by the ounce; it always concludes that the needs outweigh the resources – Erin M. Straza

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines scarce as “deficient in quantity or number compared with the demand: not plentiful or abundant”.

And it’s true that there are things that are scarce in this world.

If you have a hobby of collecting coins or vintage toys, for example, you know that some items are harder to come by than others.

This is part of what makes such hobbies enjoyable.

On the other hand, if you’re a music lover, you might want to make sure to get in line early to buy tickets for when your favourite artist comes to town.

After all, there are only so many seats in the venue.

Recognizing this reality doesn’t mean you’re in a scarcity mindset – it goes far deeper than this.

Living in a scarcity mindset means to believe everything necessary for any progress in your life, or even to maintain the status quo, is limited, running out, or hard to get.

This leads you to see life as a zero sum game – if other people are prospering, they’re doing so at your expense.

If you compare your life to others and feel anger and envy toward their success, it might be a sign you’re in a scarcity mentality.

It can even become an obsession – a laser sharp focus on what you don’t have.

The more you ruminate on the lack of intimacy you feel with your partner, the lack of respect you feel from your parents, or the lack of fulfillment you feel in your career, the more intense the feelings will be that come along with them.

It can become a central focus of your life – in some cases, we even build our sense of self around what we don’t have.

Strangely, though, a scarcity mindset can come from a more altruistic angle as well.

If you perceive yourself as doing well at the expense of others, you might be constantly sabotaging yourself and hold yourself back from truly manifesting the life of your dreams.

After all, if you’re an empathic person, you might fear that if you live your dream life, it causes others to not live their own.

This can lead to sacrificing your own dreams and people pleasing, but this attitude is as unfulfilling as it is untrue.

Needless to say, a mindset of scarcity only serves to build resentment, frustration, fear, and to hold you back from living your dream life.

What Happens When You Live In A Scarcity Mindset?

There’s actually some scientific research that explores how a scarcity mindset affects us.

A 2019 study by Huijsmans Et Al took a look at how poverty affects the way people make decisions.

They found that people who went through experiences where they found it difficult to get what they need created a scarcity mindset.

Because a scarcity mindset causes your brain to hyper focus on what it is you don’t have, all that extra thinking power can cause you to have less attention in other areas of your life.

They found that those who live in a scarcity mindset tend to make decisions that either make their situation worse, or keep them in their current situation.

Those who live in a scarcity mindset tend to be more likely to:

  • Take out high interest loans
  • Not save money
  • Eat less nutritious food
  • Buy more lottery tickets
  • Make impulse purchases

Beyond that, though, a scarcity mindset actually affects your ability to solve problems.

If you live in a scarcity mindset, you’re less able to think creatively, reason your way through problems, plan a new project, get started on a new task, and remain focused on that task once you do manage to get started.

All this, because your brain is too busy thinking about what’s lacking in your life.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

What Is An Abundance Mindset?

If you want love and abundance in your life, give it away Mark Twain

On the other hand, we have an abundance mindset.

This is the opposite of a scarcity mindset, as much as up is the opposite of down.

An abundance mindset focuses not on limitations, but on opportunities.

The world is a big place with so much potential that we humans have only just begun to explore.

That’s not to say limitations don’t exist.

An abundance mindset acknowledges this.

After all, humans don’t have wings so we can’t fly.

But then again, we can fly, can’t we?

Rather than assuming that human flight is impossible, the Wright Brothers designed, built, and flew the world’s first airplane.

They had an abundance mindset, even if they might not have thought of it that way.

Those who live in an abundance mindset don’t ignore the challenges they face, or pretend they don’t exist.

Rather, they believe that through ingenuity, creativity, and cooperation, we can overcome the challenges we face not only as individuals, but in the world as a whole.

Just like how vision boards, when used correctly, help rewire your brain to accept your dream life as reality, the same can be said for an abundance mindset.

When you live in a state of abundance, you proceed on the belief that the life of your dreams is not only possible, it’s achievable.
